Block Breaker

The ball goes up and the wall is waiting. Block Breaker is a clean, smooth take on the block-smashing formula everyone knows from the arcades. Open the page and the paddle is ready.

How does Block Breaker play?

You slide the paddle along the bottom of the screen. The task is simple: keep the ball in play and chip away at the blocks. Where the ball goes, though, depends on which part of the paddle it hits. Strike it dead centre and it flies straight up; catch it near the edge and it takes an angle. That detail is the foundation of the whole game.

Some blocks refuse to break on the first hit and need two or three. The power-ups that drop from broken blocks make life easier: effects that widen the paddle, add extra balls or clear a whole area at once. To grab them you have to steer the paddle into position.

Finish a round and new rows are added on top while the pace rises. You start with three lives and can earn extras as you go. The score sits at the top, and the real target is beating your own record.

Why kids like it

The rules are clear at a glance and the first round takes a minute. Angle judgement improves without you noticing. When you lose, restarting happens with no waiting.

Is it safe?

Colourful blocks, a plain background and light sound effects. Nothing frightening and nothing unpleasant. Suitable for all ages.

• Aim for the top rows: A ball that gets behind the wall breaks a pile of blocks on its own.
• Do not hoard power-ups: Stacking effects together turns a hard level into an easy one.
• Wait for multi-ball: On crowded levels this is the most useful power-up by far.
• Stay calm when it speeds up: Watch the paddle rather than the ball and make small steady moves.
